Conservation of the diversity of crops is an important local strategy for biological diversity. Many intercultural gardens want to contribute to the resistance against bio piracy on the global markets and want to defend the rights of farmers to grow and distribute their own seeds. Conservation of seeds is more than symbolic action – and in many places it has to be relearned. Crops, if they are not planted are lost, as well as the complex knowledge about plants, their multiplication and the storage of seeds. Stiftung Interkultur arranged a workshop at ARCHE NOAH (Society for the Conservation of Crop-Diversity Development) in Schiltern, Austria. The participants from intercultural gardens in Austria and Germany informed themselves about the work of Arche Noah and were introduced to methods for seed multiplication.
